Color Roughs

color rough for the entire spread

In this stage of the design, it was fairly easy because the colors are limited. A marsh would usually have dark greens, browns and black. The swan would be white and the Labrador would be black. I did tried different combinations of the chosen colors. For instance, the trees would have a little green and not being just brown or the swan being a bit messy due to it being in the forest.

The Rough Copy

After researching the required images it was time to do the rough copy of the spread. This was the not hard. I did have a previous rough copy of the spread before the research I made of the swan, marsh and dog. I did like the new rough copy of the spread than the old rough copy because the swan looks in the new spread appears more real and the marsh have different shapes of trees.

Research

Before creating the rough copy, I had to research how a baby swan, marsh and hunting dog looks due to the text I chose. I first started researching the swan. This was really fast and easy. To prevent me from coming back and see how the swan looks, I sketched some images. The next thing to research was how a marsh looks like. This was the hard part because I tried to find it but no book had. I had eventually found one picture but was hard to make out what was really in a marsh. Researching the marsh took some time before I actually got it. Then I concluded that most marshes had trees and logs. The last thing was the Hunting dog. I have no knowledge about dog so, I had had been given a book of dogs. I was told that Labrador’s retrievers are the perfect dogs when hunting. I then sketched how I want the dog to look and position.

Brainstorming

the idea i had chosen for the
spread
Brainstorming for this assignment was a little challenging. The class and I had to consider a lot of features when creating a spread. First consideration of a spread was where the text was going to be located and the crease in the middle of the spread like in most children’s book. The spread also had to be based on the text we chose in the story. Most of my chosen texts had either 3 to 4 ideas. At the end of my brainstorming, I concluded this step by choosing the text “This gave the poor duckling such a fright that he twisted his head about to hide it under his wing. But at that very moment a fearfully big dog appeared right beside him. His tongue lolled out of his mouth and his wicked eyes glared horribly.”

Introduction to the Assignment

For this assignment, the class and I had to create a spread for a short story. The spread I had chosen was the short story, “The Ugly Duckling”. It’s about a duckling that was really a swan and he got treated disrespected because of his appearance but at the end he was a really beautiful bird.

Last few touches to the final poster

final copy for Flowers for Algernon poster
Last part of the poster design was inserting the mouse. This was no challenge of problem. I simply glued the image of the mouse on the poster and the poster was complete. I had been requested to clean up the image and let the font appear bolder. I did have to sharpen the chalk to get the lining of the letters accurate. Once these adjustments were complete my poster had been complete officially. I really enjoyed creating this poster and was really surprised at the final out come I learn a lot of new techniques and how to solve big problems. In conclusion, this is a poster for Flowers for Algernon.

Practicing drawing silhouette freely

Before starting of the good and final design, I had to another problem. The problem was how I was going to insert my outline of the image to the green chalkboard like construction paper without struggling to see the out lines. I had then been told to draw silhouette of green construction papers and draw lots of silhouettes I can. I had about 10 to 15 sheets of green construction, front and front filled with silhouettes. Bu the time I was finished, practicing draw silhouettes freely, I was able to draw the final copy. the image shown are a few example i did in this process.
